(From left to right, Rabbi Joel Portnoy, Rabbi Dovid Lewis, Rabbi Reuben Silverman, Rabbi Chaim Kanterovotz, Rabbi Shlomo Ellituv and Rabbi Amir Ellituv at Morris Feinmann Home’s celebration tea)

Seven of South Manchester’s Rabbonim gathered at Morris Feinmann Home for a celebration afternoon tea.

Hosted on Wednesday 14/12/11, the tea was held to celebrate the Home’s kitchens being awarded fully kosher status, under the supervision of Rabbi Shlomo Ellituv, supported by the Manchester Beth Din.

The Home has received several donations which have funded significant structural improvements in the kitchen and the installation of new equipment.

All Morris Feinmann Home staff have now been fully trained in areas relating to the purchasing, preparation and serving of food in the kitchens, dining rooms, residents’ bedrooms and in all public areas.

Helen Lister, vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees at Morris Feinmann Home, said: “This could not have been achieved without the good humour, patience and complete commitment of Rabbi Ellituv, who has personally supervised this project from start to finish. He has managed to instil his dedication to the project in all of the Home’s kitchen staff.”

Rabbi Ellituv was joined by Rabbi Dovid Jaffe, Rabbi Joel Portnoy, Rabbi Dovid Lewis, Rabbi Reuben Silverman, Rabbi Chaim Kanterovotz and Rabbi Amir Ellituv.

Helen Lister added: “We are extremely grateful to Rabbi Ellituv and thank him most sincerely.”

Morris Feinmann Home – South Manchester’s only Jewish care home for older people – has enlisted solicitor Mark Benjamin to help strengthen its links within the Jewish community.

Mark will take on a communications role to raise awareness of older people in need of care and support. He hopes to develop links with synagogues, their rabbis and liaison committees.

Commenting on his new role, Mark said: “I’m delighted to take on the new communication role at Morris Feinmann Home. We want to ensure that all older Jewish people and their families are aware of the range and quality of Morris Feinmann’s care services and of the caring Jewish environment at the Home.”

Alan Wilkins, chairman of Morris Feinmann Home, commented: “We welcome Mark in this role, and look forward to working with him as part of Morris Feinmann’s ongoing awareness campaign. It’s extremely exciting having such heavy-weight members of the community as volunteers here at Morris Feinmann. We’re always thankful to the many people who give up their time to help us continue providing care and support for the older Jewish community in Manchester.”

Morris Feinmann Home held an afternoon tea party on Sunday to celebrate the loyal support and contribution of three long-serving volunteers.

Alan Wilkins, chairman of Morris Feinmann Home, expressed great appreciation to Adele Rose, who established a shop for residents of the Home in 1974 and has been an active supporter ever since; Ruth Berger, who took over management of the shop 23 years ago and continues to run it today; and Werner Lachs, who has been chairman of the Friends of Morris Feinmann Trust for many years.

Alan commented: “Operating as an independent charity, the Home relies not only upon its dedicated staff, but also on remarkable and charitable people who give their time to enriching the lives of our residents.

“Over the years, Adele and Ruth have given up countless hours of their time to support us and Werner has tirelessly managed the Friends of Morris Feinmann Trust. We can’t thank them enough for their loyalty and dedication to the Home.”

The Morris Feinmann Home has bounced back after a challenging 2009 and is now operating on full occupancy, with a waiting list, announced Chairman Alan Wilkins at the Annual General...

The Morris Feinmann Home has bounced back after a challenging 2009 and is now operating on full occupancy, with a waiting list, announced Chairman Alan Wilkins at the Annual General Meeting on Sunday 28 November.

Last year, the Home, which is based in Didsbury and is the only Jewish residential care facility in South Manchester, suffered from dwindling financial reserves, low revenues and high operating costs. Currently, thanks to the generosity of its donors, the high bed occupancy and increased productivity of the staff, the Home’s reserves are now strong and the operating deficit has been substantially reduced.

The majority of the beds in the home are currently taken up by permanent nursing and residential clients and the balance are providing short-term respite care. Morris Feinmann is also growing its daycare services, including the introduction of a Chai Cancer Care facility within the building. In addition, Barfield House Trust has refurbished the four annexe suites in Barfield House that were previously owned by Morris Feinmann and is selling these as one bedroom luxury apartments. To date, two of these apartments have been sold and this has further strengthened the Home’s balance sheet.

Wilkins also stated that, in response to feedback, the trustees have launched a new fee structure for new residents, eliminating the room entry fee for all standard rooms and including a supplement for premium rooms only. Current residents who moved in before the changeover will continue to pay the previous lower fee rates.

Another important announcement at the AGM was the news of the enhancement of the kosher kitchen, by seeking recognition from the Manchester Beth Din. This project has been directed by the Home’s chaplain, Rabbi Ellituv, and has involved a major kitchen refurbishment, the acquisition of new utensils and crockery, strengthening of kosher suppliers and staff retraining. The cost of the project has been fully covered by generous donors.

Alan Wilkins said: “We’re now looking forward to next year and beyond. We will maintain a philosophy of continuous improvement in all our endeavours and will continue to develop strategies to meet the long term needs of the South Manchester Jewish community.

“Demographic studies indicate that the South Manchester Jewish community is growing rapidly, particularly in older age groups. Our resident waiting list proves that, whilst most people prefer to live in their own homes until a much older age than previously, there is an increasing demand to spend twilight years in the warm comfort and caring Jewish environment of this wonderful home.

“We are intensely aware that, whilst the Home is maintained like an immaculate, five-star hotel, the fabric of the building is ageing and there are limitations in the number of beds and services that we can accommodate. My hopes and prayers are that with the generous support of the community we will be able to develop the next generation of Morris Feinmann Home in the not-too-distant future.”

We were honoured to receive a visit from Manchester’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Alison Firth, as we celebrated winning Manchester City Council’s ‘Dignity in Care’ award, which pays tribute to our exceptional standards in care.

We’re delighted that the Home has been awarded this prestigious accolade and we’ll continue to make every effort to maintain – while also aiming to surpass – this high level of care.
